Hi, folks!  We are so excited to share the news with you that our new album is nearly ready! Written between Nashville and Melbourne, the second full length album from Brooke Russell and The Mean Reds, ‘The Way You Leave’ is due for release on October 18. Sweet, sultry and soaring, this new collection of songs document love, loss, friendship and regret and feature co-writes with Andrew Combs, Clare Reynolds and Tobias Hengeveld as well as covers of JD Souther and Tom Waits.

With Grant Taylor on guitar, Ben Franz on pedal steel, Luke Richardson on double bass, Roger Bergodaz on drums and Brooke Russell on lead vocal and guitar, the band tracked the bed of the album live at Union St Studios, with Roger Bergodaz at the helm. Two tracks stripped back the Mean Reds sound to feature Brooke in trio mode with double pedal steel guitar backing from Franz and special guest Shane Reilly (Lost Ragas, Tex Perkins). Reilly also composed stunning string arrangements and piano before the final touches were made by some special friends bringing backing vocal magic; Ladie Dee (Howl At The Moon), Emilee South, James Arneman and Flora Smith (Small Town Romance), Tracy McNeil and Jac Tonks (Amarillo).

The band will launch ‘The Way You Leave’ live at The Spotted Mallard on Saturday 21st October with special guests Xani and Cookie Baker, Tickets are on sale (see link below) and the album is available to pre-order from Bandcamp now and on iTunes from 5th October.

Hope to see you at a show very soon! Feel free to get in touch at meanteam@brookerussellandthemeanreds.com.

Big love! BR&TMR xxx

Shows and Records and News! Oh My!

Hello dear friends!

It's been a while since I've written! As we're currently recording and booking shows and getting excited about 2017 I thought I'd say hello and let you know how things are going in Mean Reds land.

We have a new album on the way! Recorded at Union St Studios with Roger Bergodaz, Ben Franz is on the pedal steel, Grant Taylor is weaving his magic on the guitar, Luke Richardson is on double bass and Rog is super clever cos he's engineering AND drumming at the same time. We've had special guest Shane Reilly in on mandolin and pedal steel (yes, that's two pedal steels) and in a couple of weeks we have a choir of some of my favourite voices in Melbourne coming in to ooh and ah all over the place. Exciting times! We'll have some sneaky listens ready for you soon and we'll be setting up a pre-order system late March so stay in touch and follow us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram to hear and see more.

Here's a few pics from the studio and see below for some upcoming shows! We're going to be heading around the country this year so please come along and say hello somewhere along the way.

Big love to y'all!

Nashville Songwriting Trip

Hello from Nashville!

I've had the most wonderful time here over the last month and as much as I miss Melbourne, I'll be very sad to head home. I've been lucky enough to write new songs with Andrew Combs, Chad Mason and Ben Cameron and to meet with many wonderful musicians and industry gurus. I'm super excited to get some new material recorded and out to y'all!

I have a special show coming up at the Union Hotel Brunswick where I will be previewing the new songs I have written here. It's on the 8th May and I'd love to see your faces there! The Mean Reds will join me for a second set and we have Roger Bergodaz joining us on drums, Tim Keegan on bass and Shane Reilly on pedal steel as well as the wonderful Grant Taylor on lead guitar. 5pm! Come say hello!

Here's a few pics of my fave moments in Nashville! Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more updates!

Big love from Tennessee,

Brooke x

New EP, Tamworth and Nashville... Hello 2016!

It's been a fabulous year here at Mean Reds HQ with plenty of gigs and fun but man, we're looking ahead to 2016! Our brand new EP is out now and available on Bandcamp, iTunes etc. We launched this baby at The Gasometer Hotel with the wonderful James Kenyon! Have a listen here...

With the new year approaching, there are big things ahead! I'm off to Tamworth in January as part of the Deep Down South Melbourne Americana Showcase and that's gonna be heaps of fun! I've also been luck enough to receive funding from Creative Victoria so I can head back to Nashville in March/April and write some songs with the city's best. I can't wait!

Thanks so much for your support in 2015! Happy New Year to y'all!

The Night Sky Is A Jewellery Store Window

I had the absolute pleasure of spending a few hours in Damon's shed a month ago, recording this tune and drinking coffee! The Night Sky Is A Jewellery Store Window is a video series showcasing some of Melbourne's finest singer songwriters and I was very excited to be a part of it! Here's the song 'Tell Me Darlin', soon to be released on our forthcoming second album. It's a love song to Melbourne and to my darling friend who never knows when to switch off and just enjoy the moment.

Mean Reds release the new single April 10.

Hey folks!

We're very excited to bring you our brand new single, Never's Gonna Take Too Long this Friday April 10. Available on iTunes, Spotify and Bandcamp, it's a tale of lost love and trying to move on when your heart belongs to someone else. The first taste from the our forthcoming second album sees us moving away from the jazzier influence on their first album and delving into a darker, widescreen country sound.

We're launching this baby at The Gasometer Hotel on Sunday April 19th in a Double Single Launch with Cat Canteri. Support from Emilee South and tickets available through OzTix and The Gaso website.

Check it out on Friday!

Much love!

Happy 2015 from The Mean Reds

Happy New Year to all of you from Mean Reds HQ! I hope the holiday season was fun and full of joy! We've been having a well earned rest but we're hitting the studio for pre-production next week and prepping for our first big band gig of the year... Australia Day! We're delighted to be performing at Shamworth Country Music Festival at The Yarra!! (Ha! What a name!) Come and say hello and hear some new tunes before we hit the studio to make this new record!

We're Going To Nashville

Brooke Russell and The Mean Reds are very excited to have been offered a spot at the prestigious 2014 Americana Festival in September! As well as performing with the Sounds Australia gang, we've been offered an exclusive showcase as one of four Australian acts who receive this rare opportunity. To perform our songs on the international stage and attend the conference will be a major step for us and the chance of a lifetime!! Check out the amazing line up of artists by clinking on the link here...

But we need your help to get there. We have only recently been notified and missed out on funding and as we all know, flights ain't cheap! Two of The Mean Reds, Josh Barber and Brooke Russell, will be attending so we will need $4500 for flights and freight and another $2000 to cover visas, promotional flyers, two session players in Nashville and to give us a little help with living expenses. And just so you know, the showcase is an amazing gig but we will make no money while in the US and will be restricted by our visa status. So we're asking for your support! As fans and friends of the Mean Reds we have chosen a series of rewards for you to select from, starting with a Thank You postcard from Nashville to your very own house concert.

Click on this link to pledge!  http://www.pozible.com/project/184093

Please help us with this amazing opportunity! Feel free to share and extend to your networks as we know we can't do this without your assistance!

Gratefully and excitedly yours...

Mean Reds March Update!

Hello dear friends!

It's been a while so I thought I'd catch you up with all the happenings in the Mean Reds camp!

2013 was a cracker year full of adventures and we finished up the year with a spot in Basement Discs' Top 10 Australian Albums of the Year as well as Unpaved's 50 Best Albums of 2013! Such a delight! We had a ridiculously fun summer of gigging, relaxing and hanging out in Hobart for MONA FOMA and now 2014 is bringing exciting adventures all round. While Grant and I have stuck it out in the city, Ben has spent the last month on tour with The Stray Sisters, selling out venues all over the country. Josh has been overseas and back several times and is in the process of releasing a new project with Yuko Nishiyama... a beautiful album that you should all check out!

Our darling friend, Tilman Robinson has launched his incredible album Network of Lines and we were very proud to be in the audience at the Melbourne Recital Centre when he launched that baby!

As for what is coming next, we've been busy writing new material and planning ideas for a new album at the moment. I spent a lovely weekend holed up in a house in Daylesford, demoing new tunes and compiling ideas for album number two and we'll be spending some serious time fleshing these ideas out in the coming months! We'll be playing some of these new songs at upcoming gigs over the next few months.

Thanks you all so much for your continued support!

Hope to see y'all at a gig real soon!! Take care!!
